James Lambert Gibson, Jr., son of Dean James L. Gibson of the School of Arts and Sciences, was chosen as the 1929 Rhodes Scholar from Utah, by the committee which met Friday last...

The selection was made by a committee... These gentlemen made their selection on the basis of intellectual promise, combined with qualities of character, leadership and interest in sports, as stipulated in the will of Cecil Rhodes.

Mr Gibson will leave for Germany in August to visit friends there and to polish up on his languages. He will go to Oxford to enter school in October.

He is a member of the 1929 graduation class and received his A.B. degree in the School of Arts and Sciences with a major in mathematics. Gibson was chosen for Phi Kappa Phi in the fall term of his senior year. He will take out his M.A. in mathematics this year.

The scholar is a graduate of East High school and has also studied in Bonn, Germany and at a French Military School.

Gibson is a member of the Scabbard and Blade and holds the rank of Major in the R.O.T.C. He was one of four people to organize the Sunrise Battery here at Utah U. and was chairman of decoration committee for the Military Prom last year.

The holders of Rhodes scholarhips are entitled to a stipend of $1950.50 a year for three years at Oxford University, Oxford, England. In order to qualify, a candidate must be an American citizen between the ages of 18 and 25 years, single and a resident or college student of two years’ standing in the state to which he applies.

The last three Rhodes scholars from Utah have been students at the U. of U., Paul Kimball in 1927and Paul Schettler in 1928, and Mr. Gibson, 1929.
