Elected to Phi Kappa Phi scholarship fraternity 1929.

Marl Gibson will receive the L.D.B. Degree from the University of Utah in June. He will graduate with the highest average in his class and is the only student of the University Law School admitted to Phi Kappa Phi this year. He is the oldest son of Dean and Mrs. J.L. Gibson. James L. Gibson, Jr., second son of Dean and Mrs. Gibson, whio will receive the A.B. Degree from the University in June, was accepted by the Phi Kappa Phi fraternity at their previous meeting. The brothers will be initiated into the fraternity at a meeting to be held at the university in the near future. Both boys have many friends in Vernal having visited often at the home of their grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gibson and Mrs. Jane Pope.

Ex-Carbon Senator, 56, Dies of Heart Ailment

Marl D. Gibson
, 56, Price, attorney and former member of the Utah State Senate, died early Thursday at the home of his mother, Mrs. J.L. Gibson, 1337 Harrison Ave, (1355 South) [Salt Lake City], of a heart ailment.

He served as Carbon County district attorney and served three successive four-year terms as state senator, beginning in 1949. He was active in Democratic Party circles.

Mr. Gibson was a director of Price First National Bank, Carbon Motorway, Inc., and an honorary member of Price Elks lodge.

A Salt Lake City native, Mr. Gibson attended University of Utah and obtained the LLB degree in 1929. He began his law practice in Price and has resided there since 1931. He was a member of American Bar Assn., Eastern Utah Bar Assn, and a member and former commissioner of the Utah State Bar.

Mr. Gibson was born nov. 24, 1904, in Salt Lake city, a son of Dean J.L. Gibson of University of Utah School of Arts and Sciences, and Mrs Sarah P. Gibson. He married Bessie Jameson Sept. 28, 1932, in Price.

Survivors include his widow; two daughters, one son, Mrs Marlene Copening, Sacramento, Calif.; Susan Gibson, Price; Jerry L. Gibson, Salt Lake City; two grandsons; mother; brothers, sisters, J. Lambert Gibson, Salt Lake City; Keath P. Gibson, ___, N.J.; Earl Gibson, Chamblee, Ga.; Mrs. Lyman (Rhea) Parratt, Ithaca, N.Y., Mrs. L.D. (Vera) Sch___, Salt Lake City.

The Utah Legislative Council, which held its organization meeting Thursday, adopted a resolution of condolences to the family of Mr. Gibson paying tribute to the former state senator for outstanding contributions as a member of the Legislature and as a citizen.
