"I, Don Carlos Pack, the 6th child and 4th son, of John Pack and Julia Ives, was born August 22, 1847, at Winterquarters, in the wilderness, now Florence, Nebraska. My father and mother were sealed for time and eternity by Hyrum Smith (brother of Joseph, the Prophet) in the Nauvoo Temple, August 1943.

He built his own home in Kamas; he had a lumbering buisiness and homesteaded land in Ioka where they raised hay and alfalfa and had cattle. He was single for 20 years and raised his four children before remarrying. He was 59 when his last son was born. He often told pioneer stories to his grandchildren. He made a train trip to Los Angeles to visit his ailing son, Don Elbert in 1927.

Arrived in [Salt Lake] Valley: Sep 1848, Heber C. Kimball Co.

Don Carlos’ his of his youth in the [Salt Lake] Valley is a resume of the life of most of the young boys in the valley. He herded cows at Ensign Peak, and drove them down Main Street.

Amusements were conducted in the front room of his father’s home. Brigham Young had advised his father to build a large room, 30’ by 40’ for entertainment. It was used for parties and dances.

By the time he was 19, he was freighting dynamite between Los Angeles and Salt Lake. He also hauled lumber from Kamas to Salt Lake. He was a veteran of the Black Hawk Indian War. He worked in the saw mills and was involved with building, homesteading and raising horses, cattle and sheep.

He participated with his second family in settling Ioka on the Indian reservation during 1909. He participated in the dramas in Kamas and always took the part of the”villain.” He was a good public speaker and participated in the church activities whenever called upon.

He remained active all his life until he got pneumonia and died in 1931.
